Art therapists may have three levels of credentials.
The first level is Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P), which means the therapist has a master's degree, has met rigorous educational standards and is practicing art therapy under an approved supervisor(s). The ATR-P is not a required credential to apply for the ATR. The second level is Registered Art Therapist (ATR), which means the therapist has a master's degree, has met rigorous educational standards and, as an art therapist, has completed the required amount of supervision and clinical hours to meet ATCB registration standards. ATRs may then take a comprehensive national exam to become Board Certified (ATR-BC). ATR-BCs who have met rigorous standards for supervisory qualifications may obtain the Art Therapy Certified Supervisor (ATCS) credential as an additional optional credential.
